Ionograph SMD II采用动态测试方式。在腔体萃取溶液流过部件来溶解污染物，然后流入管路，溶液通过探头，由探头连续采集萃取溶液的电阻率，数据由计算机中运行的软件进行积分，其后溶液由泵，泵入离子交换柱进行净化，后再流回测试腔体，实现萃取溶液的循环。萃取溶液可以比静态溶液实现更高的溶解性和离子化，因为测试后再循环的溶液是超净的。污染物读数的增量是一段时间的累加或集成。后的污染物数值与标准NaCl相比较而得出NaCl质量/区域的数值。
